For nearly four weeks, Laura Gallacher was a constant presence at Russell Brand’s side as he faced trial for rape and sexual assault.
But on Thursday, the couple left Southwark Crown Court separately, their lives changed beyond recognition.
Brand, 51, was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women, with the judge warning he faces a significant prison sentence.
The former comedian, who denied all seven charges, was acquitted of two further counts of rape and one of attempted indecent assault before being remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday.
His wife Laura, who had supported him throughout the proceedings and even taken to the witness stand in his defence, appeared visibly distressed as the verdicts were delivered.
Just moments earlier, Brand had turned towards his wife of nine years and told her: ‘Laura, I love you.’

When the guilty verdicts were announced, she reportedly sank into her seat and clutched the hands of another woman, before becoming tearful as her husband was led away by prison officers.
His barrister subsequently asked that Brand be granted bail so he could say goodbye to Laura and their three children, describing the request as an ‘act of humanity’. The judge refused.
It marked a turning point for a couple whose relationship has spanned two decades, a Hollywood marriage to another woman, three children and, more recently, a shared embrace of Christianity.
And while Brand’s transformation from Hollywood star to controversial online personality has played out in full public view, the woman who has remained by his side has largely preferred to stay out of the spotlight.

Who is Laura Gallacher?
Laura comes from a famous family herself, although one considerably removed from the chaotic world of celebrity that made her husband a household name.
She is the daughter of former professional golfer Bernard Gallacher and younger sister of television presenter Kirsty Gallacher.
Growing up on Surrey’s exclusive Wentworth Estate, Laura enjoyed a privileged childhood alongside neighbours including Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
She later studied art, developing an interest in creativity that would eventually lead to a career as an author and illustrator.
Her introduction to Brand came in 2006, when she was just 19 and he was 31, at the height of his fame as a provocative comedian and television presenter.
Kirsty had arranged tickets for one of his performances, and Laura met him afterwards. Recalling their first encounter during her evidence at Southwark Crown Court, Laura explained that Brand initially approached her friend before turning his attention to her.
A romance followed, although the relationship proved difficult from the outset.
Brand’s reputation as a womaniser was hardly a secret, and Laura acknowledged in court that she knew about his promiscuity when they began dating.
‘I wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people,’ she explained.
Although the pair had declared their love for one another, she said it soon became clear that monogamy was a struggle for Brand.
They separated in 2007, leaving Laura heartbroken.
Finding each other after Katy Perry
Following their split, Brand embarked on a whirlwind romance with American pop star Katy Perry, whom he married in India in 2010.
Their marriage famously lasted just 14 months, with Perry later claiming Brand had informed her of his intention to divorce via text message.
Laura, meanwhile, had moved on with her life, working in the hospitality industry and pursuing other relationships. But in 2015, fate, or perhaps a particularly convenient coincidence, brought the former couple face to face once more.
Laura was recovering from a painful breakup when a friend persuaded her to go for a walk along a canal in east London. There, unexpectedly, stood Brand.
‘Russell was standing there, like he’d organised it,’ she recalled in an interview with Grazia.
This time, she believed the man she had fallen for almost a decade earlier had changed.
Brand apparently expressed a desire to leave his wild lifestyle behind and settle down, something Laura wanted herself.
The couple rekindled their relationship and married in 2017 in an intimate ceremony near their home in Henley-on-Thames, attended by celebrity guests including Jonathan Ross, Noel Gallagher, and David Baddiel.
They welcomed their first daughter, Mabel, in 2016, followed by Peggy in 2018 and son Herb in 2023.
Russell Brand and Laura Gallacher’s family life
The couple’s first child, daughter Mabel, was born in November 2016, with Brand reportedly breaking the news to fans during a stand-up performance at Nottingham Playhouse.
According to an audience member, the comedian explained that he needed to get home quickly because his girlfriend had just given birth.
Their second daughter, Peggy, arrived in July 2018, although the couple opted against making a major public announcement.
A source said at the time that the pair were ‘over the moon’ but preferred to keep the happy news relatively private.
Their family grew again in 2023 with the arrival of their first son.
Despite Brand’s famously outspoken public persona, the couple have largely shielded their three children from the spotlight, occasionally sharing glimpses of family life without revealing too much about them.
Speaking about fatherhood in a 2017 interview with ITV News, Brand said becoming a parent meant having ‘something outside of yourself that’s more important than you’, describing the experience as ‘the most wonderful thing’.
Now, with Brand remanded in custody following his conviction, Laura faces the prospect of caring for their three young children without her husband at home.
Laura has cultivated a very different public image from her husband over the years.
While Brand continued to attract attention for his outspoken opinions, she built a career around mindful living, creativity and family activities, publishing books including The Joy Journal.
Their home in Oxfordshire provided a suitably idyllic backdrop, complete with chickens, pigs and a remarkable collection of cats. Yet Brand occasionally offered glimpses of a less balanced domestic arrangement.
In a 2019 interview with The Sunday Times, he admitted he had never spent an entire day alone caring for his children.
‘Laura does all of it,’ he said, while conceding that childcare was exhausting.
The comments sparked criticism, although Kirsty defended her brother-in-law, describing his remarks as flippant and insisting he was a hands-on father. Laura also appeared willing to see the funny side.
‘Sometimes it can look like I’m dealing with an adult toddler,’ she told Grazia in 2020, before explaining that Brand enthusiastically participated in her interests.
But their seemingly peaceful family existence was thrown into turmoil in September 2023, when a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches brought serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Brand into the public eye.
He denied the allegations, claiming he had been the subject of a coordinated media attack.
Laura largely withdrew from public life, deleting her Instagram account and stepping away from the interviews and publishing work that had previously occupied her.
A shared religious awakening
In 2024, the family relocated to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida, swapping their English countryside lifestyle for a new beginning in the United States.
By then, Brand had reinvented himself as a political commentator and online influencer, increasingly embracing right-wing talking points and conspiracy theories.
He also underwent a very public religious conversion, being baptised in the River Thames in April 2024 with the assistance of survival expert Bear Grylls.
Laura subsequently joined her husband in embracing Christianity, and the pair began hosting a podcast, Sunday Service With The Brands.

The show featured Bible discussions, prayers and reflections on their faith, offering a glimpse of the couple’s relationship as they navigated mounting legal scrutiny.
During one episode ahead of the trial, Laura acknowledged that the prospect of returning to Britain and confronting photographers outside court made her nervous.
It was an uncomfortable return to public attention for someone who had spent years attempting to maintain her privacy.
Laura supports Russell in court
However, when the time came for Brand to face a jury, Laura did considerably more than accompany him to court.
She appeared as his only character witness, telling jurors that the man she knew was caring, attentive and devoted to their family.
‘Russell, my husband, is caring, he is kind, he is a wonderful father to our children,’ she testified.

‘I feel very seen by him in every way,’ she added. ‘I love him very much.’
Her evidence also revisited the difficult beginnings of their relationship, including Brand’s infidelity, as she attempted to explain the man she believed he had become.
But the jury ultimately convicted Brand of four offences committed between 2004 and 2009, during the years he was establishing himself as one of Britain’s biggest entertainment personalities.
The Metropolitan Police subsequently praised the courage of the women who came forward and said Brand had exploited his fame and status to sexually offend against them.
For Laura, the verdict means confronting a profoundly different future from the one she and her husband had built together.
She has not publicly commented on his conviction, and it remains unclear what the decision will mean for their marriage or their shared religious projects.
As Brand awaits sentencing on Monday, November 9, Laura faces the prospect of raising their three children while her husband serves what the judge has warned will be a substantial custodial sentence.
