When it comes to a child’s academic success and future, regular school attendance is vital. This not only impacts a child’s learning but can also affect their emotional wellbeing, social skills, and long-term development.
Unfortunately, absenteeism in schools across the UK is an increasing concern, with many students missing a lot of learning time. For parents, teachers, and support staff at schools, spotting the early signs of persistent absenteeism is important, as this makesattendance interventions easier to implement before too much time has been missed.
In this article, we will look at some of the early warning signs of persistent absenteeism in UK schools.
What Are the Signs?
Picking up on the early signs of persistent absenteeism means that parents and schools can provide timely support and take action before any major issues arise. Some of the signs are:
Sudden Change in Attendance
One of the early warning signs of persistent absenteeism in UK schools is a sudden change in attendance. A child who previously had an excellent attendance record might suddenly start arriving at school late or missing school altogether. This might start with occasional days off that then become more frequent. Some of the absences might be unexplained rather than due to an illness.
Signs of Anxiety and Stress
Another thing to look out for is signs of anxiety and stress. Many students who are struggling with attendance at school for whatever reason display signs of emotional distress, anxiety, and stress. This could include complaints of headaches, stomach pains, or other physical symptoms even when there is no underlying medical reason. These symptoms may be present before going to school, shortly after arrival, or even when discussing school.
Drop in Academic Performance
A drop in academic performance is another warning sign of persistent absenteeism at school. The decline in performance is often in line with missing lessons, which naturally impact the child’s ability to keep their grades up. A child who previously did very well in school might suddenly start failing exams and gettingpoor grades. This is something down to not only absenteeism but also the lack of confidence that goes alongside this.
Changes in Engagement and Enjoyment
One additional early warning sign to look out for is changes in the child’s enjoyment of school and their engagement with others. Children who previously liked going to school and took part in activities might suddenly become disengaged, avoid activities and participation, and even become disruptive in class. Some may also distance themselves from classmates, even if they enjoyed being part of the class previously.
A Gradual Decline
In most cases, persistent absenteeism at school occurs gradually over time, which is why it is important to look out for the early warning signs. Whether you are a parent, teacher, or a member of support staff, identifying these signs makes it easier to help students and get them back on track when it comes to their education and schooling.
